About Always on My Mind:

THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING

After dropping out of pastry school and messing up her big break on a reality cooking show, Leah Sullivan needs to accomplish something in her life. But when she returns home to Lucky Harbor, she finds herself distracted by her best friend, Jack Harper. In an effort to cheer up Jack’s ailing mother, Dee, Leah tells a little fib – that she and Jack are more than just friends. Soon pretending to be hot-and-heavy with this hunky firefighter feels too real to handle . . .

No-strings attachments suit Jack just fine – perfect for keeping the risk of heartbreak away. But as Jack and Leah break every one of their “just friends” rules, he longs to turn their pretend relationship into something permanent. Do best friends know too much about each other to risk falling in love? Or will Jack and Leah discover something new about each other in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

drey’s thoughts:

Jill Shalvis’ Lucky Harbor series is packed with sexy heroes and lovable heroines, all in a small town with quirky residents who’ll do anything they can for their own – and Always on My Mind is no different. Its hero is a fireman who’s always wanted to be one – or so he thought. Its heroine is the once-neighbor of said hero, whose childhood has left her with so much baggage she’d need a baggage cart thing – like the ones that run around airports loading up airplanes with our checked bags – to haul them around…

And now Leah’s bitten off more than she can chew, as she bakes her worries away in her grandmother’s bakery. Temporarily, of course – she’s only there until her grandmother’s health is on the mend. Or so she tells herself…

As for Jack, you’d think a sexy-as-heck firefighter wouldn’t be this skittish about chilling with his childhood BFF. I mean, he RUNS INTO BURNING BUILDINGS! *swoon* (Excuse me for a sec. I have a thing for bravery and courage and heroes and such…) Ok, swooning over (for now). Jack has his own issues, but I thought it was a little sad that he’d let one event get in the way of potential happiness. Granted, it put the hurt on him, but it was a LONG TIME AGO.

These two click like, well, two people who’ve known each other almost all their lives do. All the quirks. Fears. Motivations. Potential. And with all this, they’re still afraid to go there. Why?? See baggage reference above. *sigh*

But this is a romance novel, which means that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. And one by Jill Shalvis to boot, so there’s sass in spades, sexiness by the shovelful, and awww-inducing warm-fuzzies by the bucketload. You’ll laugh out loud, wish you knew these characters IRL (in real life), and want to move to Lucky Harbor so you’re there for the next pairing and can cheer them on in person.

Always on My Mind goes perfectly with a cup of tea while wrapped in a blanket in the cooling fall weather. Shalvis fans will inhale it, and new-to-Shalvis readers will want to pick up all of the other Lucky Harbor books once they’re done with it. Happy fall reading, y’all! Image may be NSFW.
